FAQs

What systems do you provide?

Currently the main focus has been on two and three-photon microscopes and widefield macroscopes. Each of these types of systems can be configured to include a variety of functionality.

How much does a multiphoton system cost?

It very much depends on the functionality you want to have. We can discuss your requirements and then I can provide you with an estimate cost. In many cases we are able to strip away some ‘bells and whistles’ which saves on cost.

Do you provide installation of the systems?

Most definitely. And we like to do this in a collaborative fashion with the lab so that there is a lab member who knows how it has been assembled. This way everyone learns together. I am also happy to assist you remotely if you would like to install the system yourself.

What hardware do you use in your designs?

We work closely with a number of worldwide suppliers. The scanners are from Novanta (previously Cambridge Technology), DAQ boards from Vidrio Technologies/National Instruments, PMTs from Thorlabs or Hamamatsu, filters from Chroma and Semrock, motorised stages from Zaber. However, we are happy to consider alternatives that you might have or need to use.

Do you provide the entire system?

In some cases and when asked, we would provide the entire system but in most cases you order the COSYS designed modules from us and, in addition, you are provided with a shopping list of parts that are ordered directly from the manufacturer. This normally includes optomechanical parts complementary to the COSYS modules. This way you get the best price for these items and are covered by the manufacturers' warranty policy.

I have only ever used 'commercial' systems before, how is it different?

A DIY system is often not a 'one-size-fits-all' solution but rather a solution that is designed for a certain set of experiments. Since it is constructed from largely 'off-the-shelf' components, any extra functionality can be added when you need it and in a way that best suits your needs and budget at the time. There is often less of the non-essential 'bells and whistles' on a DIY system, which simplifies the system a lot and reduces the cost.

Can you help me with a published design?

We work very closely with a number of high-profile research labs who are often happy to help their fellow researchers. If we haven't done it, then we will find someone who can help you.
